Abstract

This report documents the results of a Resource Inventory II investigation of the 17.03 mile Vogtle - Goshen Electric Transmission Line Corridor. This corridor included the eastern half of a 275 foot wide corridor, the western half of which contains an existing transmission line, and extends through portions of Richmond and Burke Counties. A total of 31 cultural properties were identified during this project. Multi-component historic and prehistoric properties were the rule, as 18 contained both prehistoric and historic components, versus nine with prehistoric only and four with historic only. Four of nine potential prehistoric temporal periods were not represented in the project sample (Paleo-Indian, Late Archaic, Late Woodland, and Climax Mississippian), while the oldest historic components dated to the 1782-1830 period. Twelve cultural properties were recommended for management. An evaluation system based on age and the degree of preservation evident within each property was used to determine which properties were potentially significant archaeological resources. The report documents avoidance strategies that can be used to preserve potentially significant cultural resources in place, and discusses potential research domains that can be addressed by any future investigations.
