Abstract

During a 5-day period from February 8-16, 1983, the author conducted cultural resource surveys on proposed roads and timber sale stands in Murray County, Georgia. The surveys covered a total of 377 acres in Compartments 710 and 711 in the Cohutta Ranger District of the Chattahoochee National Forest. A non-probability sampling design which included pedestrian reconnaissance and subsurface testing located one cemetery, a house site and an aboriginal lithic deposit in the project areas. In non-project areas an historic cabin and a stone pile were evaluated at the request of the District Ranger. Three sites, GA07SO1, GA07S02 and GA07SO3, deserve protection from adverse impact. Site GA07SO2 consists of an intact cultural deposit of lithic materials located in Stand No. 14 in Compartment 711. Site GA07SO4 is an historic cabin in fair condition located in Compartment 723 south of Murrays Lake. The cemetery, GA07SO1, is protected by state law.
