During the first two weeks of December, 1986 a preliminary archaeological investigation was conducted in the Gum Swamp Creek Watershed. The investigation, a Phase 11 Archaeological Survey, was carried out within the impoundment limits of a proposed lake to be built on a short, unnamed, and intermittent tributary of Gum Swamp Creek, south and east of the city of Eastman in Dodge County, Georgia (Figs. 1 and 2). The dam is to be built and the lake developed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources for recreational fishing. The investigation was designed to locate archaeological resources within the proposed lake project area prior to the initiation of construction in order to comply with the 106 procedures of the Federal Historic Preservation Act of 1966.
