Abstract

A cultural resources survey of the proposed Gwinnett Cross County Connector was conducted by Garrow & Associates, Inc. from October 26 through October 30, 1987. The project involved an archaeological survey of approximately 7.5 miles of a 110-250 foot wide highway corridor in Gwinnett County, Georgia (Figure 1). The topography and vegetation of the project area are typical of the Piedmont. The corridor right-of-way traverses wooded tracts, pastures, and abandoned fields. The corridor crosses the Yellow River and Sweetwater Creek, and includes portions of the floodplains of both streams. A total of 13 archaeological and/or historical sites and eight isolated artifact occurrences was recorded by the survey. It is suggested that four of the discovered sites, including two historic structures and two prehistoric sites, represent potentially significant archaeological and/or historical resources. Recommendations for the management of these resources are presented in the final chapter of this report.
