Abstract

Investigation into the subfloor basement fill as part of remodeling activities at 101, 103, and 105 River Street was conducted in those areas likely to be impacted by pipe routing. At 101 River Street this location was in the northwestern corner of the building. Excavation revealed a complex stratigraphy typical of materials from different time periods with no apparent stratigraphic sequencing. No testing was required at 103 River Street. Testing at four different locations in 105 River Street revealed a similar pattern of irregular stratigraphic deposition as well as a large brick sink with interior parging similar to that found in a cistern. Construction will not affect the sink in 105 River Street and the other four areas of testing did not have the integrity required for National Register eligibility because of repeated disturbance and lack of association with significant events or persons.
