An Archaeological Survey of Structure 9m, Cedar Creek Watershed, Coweta County

This report presents the results of a survey for archaeological and historical sites located within the project boundaries of Multiple Purpose Structure 9M in the Cedar Creek Watershed, Coweta County, Georgia (Figure 1). The areas surveyed include the dam site, the borrow area, and the reservoir area of the proposed structure. The survey was conducted under a contractual agreement between the U. S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service and the Department of Anthropology of the University of Georgia. The construction of Structure 9M is being sponsored by the Atlanta Soil and Water Conservation District, the West Georgia Soil and Water Conservation District, the governments of Coweta and Fulton Counties, and the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Structure 9M (Figure 2) is proposed for construction on Alexander Creek, a small tributary of Cedar Creek in the northern part of Coweta County near its boundary with Fulton County. Cedar Creek flows into the Chattahoochee River at a point approximately 15 kilometers downstream from the proposed dam site. Structure 9M is located about 15 kilometers due north of Newnan, the county seat, and about 40 kilometers southwest of Atlanta. Total size of the project area is 566 acres.

The fieldwork for the survey required 168 man hours to complete and was carried out between April 1 and April 12, 1979. Laboratory analysis and report preparation required about 256 man hours and was conducted between April 13 and May 10, 1979. Fieldwork and laboratory analysis were supervised by Jerald Ledbetter. who was assisted by Lisa O'Steen. The Project Director was James L. Rudolph. a research archaeologist with the Department of Anthropology. University of Georgia. Principal Investigator for the project was Dr. Paul R. Fish. Assistant Professor. Department of Anthropology, University of Georgia.

As outlined in the specifications for the project. this report includes (1) a description of historical and archaeological sites located within the project area; (2) an assessment of the archaeological and/or historical resources and the probable impact of the construction of Structure 9M'on these resources; (3) descriptions of the survey methodology and data analysis; and (4) statements concerning the eligibility of sites for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.
