Abstract

Data recovery on 9SW113 at the locations of three proposed Oglethorpe Power Corporation 115 kV transmission line poles was conducted by Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., during the period of July 16-19, 1985. Data recovery consisted of the excavation of one 2 x 2 m block at each pole location. Excavation data was added to earlier survey results and archival research to develop a preliminary interpretation of the site. 9SW113 represents a large (22.4 ha) multicomponent site with 10,000 years of occupation. Significant components include Early Mississippian and Historic Creek. Historic research identified the site as a documented Creek village, later part of Isham Shirling's early nineteenth century plantation and finally as a part of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century community of St. James.
