Abstract

A Cultural Resources Survey of 639 acres of Compartment 5 in Tallulah Ranger District of Chattahoochee National Forest was conducted in August and September 1993. Two archeological sites and Man historic cemetery were recorded during the survey. Site GA05-338 is a historic house site dating to the mid - late 19th century. Protection by avoidance is recommended pending additional testing to determine National Register of Historic Places status. The site was flagged and site location and description was provided to Tallulah Ranger District officials. Site GA05-339 is a moss-covered stone firebox which was interpreted as a syrup cooker. No further work was recommended there. The Hedden cemetery is protected by state laws and FS policy from disturbance. Two additional small surveys for special use areas were completed. The first was on an extension to Angel Falls footpath, at Rabun Beach Campground. No cultural resources were discovered during the survey and it was recommended that the project proceed. Surveys of four small, intensively utilized informal camping areas on Wildcat Creek Road found two prehistoric sites. One was heavily damaged and no further work was recommended. Late Archaic artifacts were recovered from the other, which may have intact cultural deposits. The site was recommended for protection pending additional investigations there.
