Abstract

Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted archaeological resource survey and evaluation of the proposed widening and reconstruction corridor for Peachtree Industrial Boulevard/McEver Road in Gwinnett and Hall Counties, Georgia. Project goals included location and evaluation of all archaeological resources which might be affected by proposed construction activities, and development of management recommendations. Historical and archaeological research consisted of examination of relevant archival resources and field survey. Field survey involved pedestrian coverage of the entire length of the project corridor, approximately 14.2 miles. Screened shovel testing and visual inspection of exposed ground surfaces were the primary methods used to locate and evaluate archaeological resources. A single archaeological site and two isolated finds of cultural material were recorded during these investigations. Site 9GW177, an historic house location, is not considered significant and is recommended not eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The isolated finds were not evaluated. Previous highway construction and erosional processes have severely impacted the majority of the project corridor, leaving the area with poor overall integrity. Based on the findings of this cultural resources survey, it is recommended that the proposed widening and reconstruction of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard/McEver Road be given archaeological resources clearance to proceed.
