Abstract

In order to help select the final site of a proposed water supply reservoir and fishing lake, Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. (SAS) conducted a reconnaissance survey of two alternative locations. One is located on Big Haynes Creek and the other on Little Haynes Creek, both located northeast of Conyers, Georgia. During a two day survey ten archeological sites were found. Seven were in the Big Haynes Creek alternative reservoir, and three were documented in the Little Haynes Creek alternative. The sites contain artifacts dating primarily from the Late Archaic period (ca. 3000 B.C.), the Early Woodland period (ca. 700 B.C.), and the Middle Woodland period (ca. A.D. 500). Archival research shows that no sites had been recorded in these areas prior to this reconnaissance, and that only 5 sites have been officially documented for Rockdale County.
