Abstract

This report presents the results of an intensive cultural resources survey of 87 Fort Rucker lease properties located in southeastern Alabama, southwestern Georgia, and northern Florida. The cultural resource assessments presented here represent one phase of the efforts of Fort Rucker to meet its legal responsibilities for the identification, evaluation, and treatment of cultural resource properties under its jurisdiction. This research was conducted under contract with the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station, Vicksburg, Mississippi. The intensive survey was conducted by the Cultural Resources Division of Geo-Marine, Inc. between March and June of 1994. The survey resulted in the identification and recording of 21 archeological sites (with at least 30 site components) and 14 localities. Of these cultural resource properties, 26 site components and all the localities are of the prehistoric period, and 4 site components date from the historic period. The site components have been categorized as "not eligible," or as of "unknown eligibility". None of the sites is considered eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) at this time. Six prehistoric sites (lDa304, lHe141, lHe142, lHe145, lHe146, and lHo124) have been designated as "unknown" in relation to National Register Eligibility. While it would be possible to subject each of these sites to Phase II data recovery or preservation, it would be in the best interests of the U.S. Army to terminate the lease agreement and abandon the sites, thus preserving them from further military impacts through avoidance. The remaining 15 sites (one of which is a historic period trash dump) were determined to be ineligible due to a lack of contextual integrity, a lack of sufficient archeological deposits, and/or a lack of association with important events or persons. All of the localities, by definition, are ineligible for nomination to the NRHP.
