Abstract

A cultural resources survey of an estimated 193.4 hectares (478 acres) of the Chattahoochee National Forest in Habersham and Stephens Counties was completed from January through March of 1995. The survey was conducted prior to timber sales in portions of Compartments 228 and 231 in the Chattooga Ranger District as authorized by and in compliance with the Antiquities Act of 1906, the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, the Archeological and Historic Conservation Act of 1974, and numerous additional laws and orders regarding federal lands, activities and permits. During the course of the survey, 14 archaeological and historic sites were identified within the Chattahoochee National Forest, however, seven of these sites are not located in the prescribed survey areas. Of the seven sites recorded in the survey areas, only one, GA06-402, had been previously reported. Those sites recorded within the prescribed survey areas are described in the following text; site forms for the remaining seven resources are included as an addendum in this report. In addition to the archeological sites, eight artifact occurrences also were recorded during this survey. Five of the seven sites within the survey areas, GA06-554, GA06-558, GA06-568, GA06-569, and GA06-570, are considered potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places under criterion "d". It is recommended that these sites be protected pending further testing to determine their individual NRHP status. The two remaining sites and the seven artifact occurrences are not considered eligible for nomination to the National Register due to lack of site integrity and limited research potential; additional archaeological investigations at these sites and the artifact occurrences are not warranted.
