Abstract

Site 9R084 is a large, deeply buried prehistoric archaeological site that also contains a minor historic component. This site was one of 14 archaeological sites identified during the Phase I investigation, and the only substantive site that was identified within the Yellow River floodplain. The 14 sites included five prehistoric sites; eight with both historic and prehistoric components; and a single historic cemetery. Site 9R084 was tested through excavation of a combination of shovel tests and formal test units. Excavation demonstrated that the intact portions of the site are preserved beneath 50 to 70 cm of alluvium that has been deposited since the nineteenth century. A Swift Creek occupation was the major component identified within the site, but materials diagnostic of the Middle Archaic, Early Woodland, late Middle/Late Woodland, and Mississippian prehistoric periods were also recovered. A minor historic usage of the site during the late nineteenth to early twentieth century was also indicated. Site 9R084 was determined to be eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, and had to be dealt with as part of the legal compliance process. This report consists of a preservation plan for 9R084 that was prepared under the provisions of a Conditional No Adverse Effect Determination that was previously agreed to by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and the City of Conyers. Site 9R084 is slated to be preserved in place under a hacking field within the Georgia International Horse Park.
