Abstract

During the months of May and July, 1994, New South Associates, Inc. conducted a 20.6 mile survey of SR 21 in Effingham and Screven Counties. Survey also included an additional area along the periphery of a Carolina Bay in Screven County. A total of 28 sites (including one previously recorded site) and 24 isolates were located along the corridor and bypass sections, and an additional 3 sites and 2 isolates were discovered around the Carolina Bay. Site types include: eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth-century house sites and artifact scatters; non-diagnostic aboriginal lithic scatters and short term camps; and Paleoindian, Archaic, and Woodland base camps. Four sites are recommended as potentially eligible for nomination to the NRHP. Sites 9EF78, 9SN165, 9SN167, and 9SN168 (Field Sites 17, 26, 28, and 29) are recommended for further work or avoidance, while the remainder of the sites are determined ineligible for nomination to the NRHP. Site 9EF78 is an historic and aboriginal site in Effingham County. Site 9SN165, a prehistoric and historic site, and Site 9SN168, a prehistoric site, are located around a Carolina Bay in Screven County. Site 9SN167 is an aboriginal site located in Screven County. All contain artifacts below the plow zone and have had limited site disturbance. This report details the background, methods, and results of this project. It takes a closer look at Carolina Bays and their implications for the environment and Native American settlement. The report offers management recommendations for the four sites recommended as potentially eligible for nomination to the NRHP.
