Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, GDOT Project BRZLB-147(10), Hart County, was surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The Department of Transportation proposes to replace the structurally deficient bridge on CR 245/Shoal Creek Church Road over Shoal Creek approximately 2.8 kilometers (1.7 miles) due east of the Franklin/Hart County line. Total project length would be approximately 0.3 kilometer (.2 mile) and would involve portions of the Hartwell Lake U.S. Reservoir Boundary. An archaeological survey of the segment affecting portions of the Hartwell Lake U.S. Reservoir Boundary was required under the provisions of the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979. A permit to conduct the survey was acquired on August 1, 1995 (ARPA Permit No. DACW21-4-95-1254); the archaeological survey was conducted on October 12, 1995. In addition, .17 hectare (.43 acre) of privately held property was surveyed as part of the proposed project. The archaeological survey consisted of an intensive pedestrian survey and systematic shovel testing. The goals of the survey were to locate, document, and assess the National Register eligibility of historic properties located within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. The survey located one site, 9HA114, within the proposed project corridor. Site 9HA114 does not qualify for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places and no further investigation is recommended. Therefore, it is concluded that implementation of GDOT Project BRZLB-147(10), Hart County, would have no effect to cultural resources on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register.
