Abstract

A preliminary archaeological field study of the Mill Branch Watershed in Bacon County, Georgia was recently conducted in response to a proposed watershed project sponsored by Bacon County and the Altamaha Soil and Water Conservation District. During an eight-day period in August, 1975, two graduate students from the Department of Anthropology, University of Georgia spent approximately 20 man-days in the watershed searching for archaeological sites. The results of these efforts were largely negative as no archaeological sites were identified. While these findings do not preclude the possibility that sites occur somewhere in the watershed, the potential for site occurrence in the areas of the proposed channels--the principal areas surveyed--is considered quite low. All evidence derived from the archaeological study indicates that the proposed project will not adversely affect any cultural resources in the Mill Branch Watershed.
