Abstract

Heritage resources surveys have been completed for 1,449 acres on the Brasstown, Chattooga and Cohutta Ranger Districts; Gilmer, Habersham, Lumpkin, Murray, Stephens, Towns and Union Counties, Georgia. These field surveys were completed during February through April 1997 by Ricardo Fernandez-Sardina, as part of the general Forest cultural resources inventory and survey prior to decisions on ground disturbing activities. Compartments examined are listed in Table 1. One previously unrecorded site, GA06-634, and one previously reported site, GA03-48, were found (Table 2). Site GA06-634 is recommended for protection and avoidance until further investigations can be conducted to determine if it is potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Site GA03-48 has been determined not eligible for the National Register and no further work or protection are recommended. Additionally, eight Isolated Artifact or Miscellaneous Cultural Occurrences (IF) were located and are listed in Table 3. These projects are directed towards identifying and recording cultural resource properties, both prehistoric and historic, in compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the USDA Forest Service Southern Region Programmatic Agreement, and the Memorandum of Understanding with the Georgia SHPO, and NEPA.
