Abstract

An intensive cultural resources survey was carried out for the Oglethorpe Power Corporation's proposed St. George 115 kV substation and transmission line in Charlton County, Georgia. The total area surveyed included a 22.7 m (75 ft) wide right-of-way corridor, for a length of approximately 44.8 km (28 miles) and a rectangular proposed substation area of approximately 2 hectares (5 acres). No previously identified historic or prehistoric archaeological resources were located within the project area boundaries through background research with the Georgia State Historic Preservation Department, nor with the State Site File Database (9/96 update) provided by the Department of Anthropology, University of Georgia. The project was carried out in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act by personnel qualified under 36 CFR part 61. Eighteen (18) archaeological resources were identified during the course of fieldwork. These included four (4) archaeological sites (9CR91, 9CR92, 9CR93 and 9CR94) and fourteen (14) isolated occurrences. All of the archaeological resources are considered not eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places based on the nature of their artifactual components and heavily disturbed contexts.
