Abstract

The YWCA of Augusta leases a tract of land on Strom Thurmond Lake from the Corps of Engineers, Savannah District. It is used for a camp. The YWCA wishes to construct a building on a 3000 m plot in this camp, and so was required by the Corps to conduct several studies to assess potential impacts of the project. Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. conducted an intensive cultural resources survey of the plot on April 16, 1993. All surface exposures near the project area were examined and nine shovel tests were excavated on a 10 m grid within the plot. No artifacts or other evidence of cultural resources were encountered. Since no cultural resources exist in the project area, the principal investigator recommends that, in regard to cultural resources, the project be given clearance to proceed, and that no further work be done.
