Abstract

An archeological and historical study was conducted at a location 2.5 miles (4 km) west of Kennesaw Mountain in Cobb County, Georgia containing earthworks constructed during the 1864 Atlanta Campaign of the Civil War. This area was to be impacted by the construction of a golf course, roads, clubhouse, and residential zones for the Marietta Country Club. Prior to construction of the golf course, those earthworks that could not be protected were excavated during January and February of 1989. Metal detectors were used to locate the archeological remains of segments of the earthworks obliterated in pastures and fields. A wide variety of metal military artifacts were located and piece plotted. The accompanying historical study examined documented military reports related to the military actions that took place in and around the earthworks. The families living closest to the earthworks in the project area were also investigated. The goal was to examine the lifeways of those individuals personally affected by the war activities in and around their homes.
