Abstract

A Phase I cultural resources survey of the proposed Fairgreen Development Site in Gwinnett County, Georgia was conducted to locate and identify cultural resources within the project area and assess resource significance. The project area covers approximately 125.6 hectares and is located along the Chattahoochee River, 8.0 kilometers west of the Sugar Hill/Buford community. Fifteen archeological sites, eight isolated finds and three isolated rock piles were recorded during the field survey. Occupations represented include the Middle Woodland, Late Woodland (Napier), Early Mississippian (Woodstock), Late Mississippian (Lamar) periods and late 19th to middle 20th century. Three of the sites (Sites 9GW 109, 9GW I 10 and 9GW 112) have been determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) by the Georgia State Historic Preservation Officer. The remaining sites and isolated finds are considered ineligible for the NRHP. Note: Site 9GW109 was tested during, the review period of the survey report and prior to the determination of its NRHP eligibility status. The results of the testing, are presented in an addendum to this report. Based on the testing data, the Site 9GWI09 area was redefined as three separate sites (Sites 9GWI09, 9GWI 15 and 9GW203). Under the redefinition, Site 9GW203 (Loci B of the original Site 9GWI09) is considered eligible for the NRHP; Sites 9GWI09 and 9GWI 15 are considered ineligible for the NRHP.
