Abstract

From July to October 1998, TRC Garrow conducted an archaeological and historic architectural I cultural resource survey prior to the construction of the proposed Cumberland Gas Le Loops A and B and replacements through Cherokee, Forsyth, Gwinnett, and Walton m Additional work was conducted in Bartow and Whitfield Counties at the site of two M&R stations. The pipeline, which will measure 24 inches in diameter, will parallel the existing 16-inch North Georgia Lateral pipeline corridor for 27 miles from milepost 0 to milepost 26.96 and 14.56 miles of AGL 12-inch pipeline between milepost 36.76 and milepost 51.32. Several contractor yards, M&R stations, extra workspace areas, and access roads were also investigated. The architectural survey, which consisted of pedestrian and vehicular reconnaissance of the project 's area of potential effects (APE), was undertaken to locate historic architectural resources. The APE was defined as the area in which the proposed pipeline would physically or visually affect any historic architectural resources. Sixteen historic architectural resources were identified in the APE. Two of the resources (FO-12 and FO-126) are recommended eligible for NRHP in accordance with 36 CFR 60.4. The remaining 14 resources are recommended ineligible for the NRHP due to alterations and/or damage. The archaeological survey combined a strategy of systematic shovel testing and surface reconnaissance. Twelve archaeological sites and three isolated finds were located. A prehistoric rock shelter (site 9GW393) and one prehistoric lithic scatter (site 9FO424) are recommended potentially eligible for the NRHP and should undergo Phase II testing prior to construction. No work is required at the remaining archaeological sites and isolated finds, as they are recommended ineligible for the NRHP under Criterion D.
