Abstract

The following document is the Historic Properties Management Plan (HPMP) for Carters Lake, Murray and Gilmer Counties, Georgia. The plans and procedures described herein are formulated by provisions of ER 1130-2-540, dated 15 November 1996. All project lands above the main dam, except a small area around Webb Creek, have been investigated to the satisfaction of the Georgia State Historic Preservation Officer. No sites there are recommended as eligible for the National Register of Historic Places although the as yet unsurveyed area may yield archeological sites in the several apparent rock shelters there. The Mobile District will survey all project lands within the Reregulation Pool for historic resources when and if the pool is drained for at least several months. The Inland Environment Section should be notified immediately if any plans to do this should be developed. Historic resource surveys conducted before and after the construction of the Carters Lake Project identified several historic resource sites on fee owned Government property. Project responsibilities defined in this document include periodic monitoring of the identified sites by project staff. Mobile District archeologists will complete National Register forms for the appropriate resources.
