Abstract

Test excavations at three closely juxtaposed sites (9Tp9O7, 9Tp9O8, and 9Tp9O9) within the proposed South LaGrange Loop were designed to determine if the associated stone piles are prehistoric and/or historic. By looking at stone pile location, morphology, size, associated artifacts, stratigraphy, soil chemistry, and nature of neighboring sites, and then comparing these observations with the known ethnographic record and demonstrated prehistoric and historic stone pile sites elsewhere in the Southeastern United States, it was shown that all three sites most closely resemble historic period agricultural field piles. Due to the lack of any additional informational content for research purposes, it is recommended that all three sites are not eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and that work on the proposed corridor can continue without any adverse affect on cultural resources.
