Abstract

In June 1998, TRC Garrow Associates, Inc., performed archaeological testing of 11 sites in southeastern Georgia to evaluate their eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Prehistoric sites 9BN37, 9EV53, and 9EV66 exhibited extremely low artifact densities and a lack of intact subsurface features. Historic period sites 9LG35 and 9LG40 revealed moderately low to low artifact densities and no intact subsurface features. Site 9LG168 is interpreted to be a turpentine collection station. Site 9LI272 has intact architectural features and a high artifact density. Site 9LI312 is the historic Town of Willie; testing revealed high artifact density in conjunction with intact architectural features. Site 9LI458 encountered intact architectural features, a moderate artifact density, and intact subsurface features. Sites 9LI460 and 9LI506 represent a historic domestic occupation and likely associated family cemetery. Sites 9BN37, 9EV53, 9EV66, 9LG35, 9LG40, 9LI460, and 9LI506 were recommended ineligible for the NRHP as a result of the current investigation. Sites 9LG168, 9LI272, 9LI312, and 9LI458 are recommended eligible for the NRHP.
