Abstract

This report describes Phase I archaeological survey of roughly 1,000 acres on Uchee Creek in Columbia County, Georgia, and Phase II testing of three sites located on that tract. The Euchee Creek Investors plan to develop the tract with residential neighborhoods and a golf course. Several acres will be left undeveloped in green spaces. No previously recorded sites were located during the literature search, although several houses, a railroad grade and a cemetery were indicated on historic maps of the area. During the survey, twenty archaeological sites and eight isolated artifacts were identified. These sites include eight prehistoric sites, nine historic sites (including the cemetery and railroad grade), and three multicomponent sites. In this report, seven of the sites are recommended as eligible or potentially eligible for listing on the NRHP. Phase II testing was conducted at three of these sites (9Cb533, 9Cb536, 9Cb537), and all three of the sites are recommended eligible for listing on the NRHP. The three remaining potentially eligible sites (9Cb524, 9Cb530, 9Cb543) will be protected due to their location within protected green areas, and no testing was conducted there at this time. In addition, a historic cemetery (9Cb535) is recommended eligible for the NRHP and should be protected.
