Abstract

On June 6, 2000 an archeological survey was conducted within the area of potential effect for a proposed reconstruction of the existing intersection of five-laned Roswell Road and four-laned Dunwoody Place, in northern Fulton County. The existing acutely angled, T-intersection will be widened and slightly reconfigured to aid traffic flow, mostly by adding new turning lanes on both roads. Virtually all of this new construction will occur within existing rights-of-way of the two roads, but close to the intersection some additional right-of-way is required. The survey confirmed that the most of the proposed improvements are within the existing rights-of-way, which have been almost entirely disturbed by ditching and grading associated with the present roads. The land abutting the right-of-way is heavily landscaped and developed. Archival research showed that no archeological or house sites occurred in the project area. Field inspection and shovel testing failed to recover any evidence of prehistoric or historic sites in the project area. No archeological sites exist within the proposed project's boundaries. Therefore, construction will not adversely impact any significant cultural resources and the project should be allowed to proceed.
