Abstract

On May 18, 2000 Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. (SAS) conducted a Phase I intensive cultural resources survey for the proposed replacement of the Pleasant Valley Road bridge over Celeoth Creek in Talbot County, Georgia. The survey was conducted for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) through the firms J. B. Trimble and Edwards Pitman Environmental, Inc. in Atlanta. The survey included area 30 m (100 ft) on either side of the existing bridge and rights-of-way for 300 m (1200 ft) on both approaches to the bridge. The area of potential effect is expected to be smaller than the area surveyed for cultural resources. The intensive cultural resources survey located one archeological site, 9TA 110, for the entire project area. This site was interpreted as an infrequently used quartz quarry during the prehistoric period but did not hold the potential for yielding significant archeological information and was recommended ineligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Therefore, because no significant cultural resources will be affected within the project area, we recommend that the project be allowed to proceed.
