Abstract

On June 6, 2000 an archeological survey was conducted within the area of potential effect for a proposed reconstruction of the existing intersection of Cumming Highway and Webb Road, in northern Fulton County. The two and three-laned, crossroads intersection will be widened and slightly reconfigured to aid traffic flow, mostly by adding new turning lanes. Most of this new construction will occur within existing 24 m (80 ft) right-of-way of Webb Road and 30 m (100 ft) right-of-way of Cumming Highway, but close to the intersection some additional tapering right-of-way is required. An existing island and turn lane on Webb Road will be expanded about 15 m. The survey confirmed that the most of the proposed improvements are within the existing rights-of-way of Cumming Highway and Webb Road, which have been disturbed by ditching and grading associated with the present roads. Archival research showed that no archeological or house sites occurred in the project area, but that one house site, 9FU294, occurs nearby. This was previously investigated archeologically and found to be not eligible for listing in the National Register. The project does not encroach upon the site. Field inspection and shovel testing failed to recover any evidence of prehistoric or historic sites in the project area. No archeological sites exist within the proposed project's boundaries. Therefore, construction will not adversely impact any significant cultural resources and the project should be allowed to proceed.
