Abstract

A Phase I cultural resources survey of the proposed Glass Tract Development Site in Gwinnett County, Georgia was conducted to locate and identify cultural resources within the project area and assess resource significance. The project area covers approximately 302 hectares and is located along the east side of the Chattahoochee River, 3.2 kilometers northwest of Suwanee and 8.3 kilometers southwest of the Sugar Hill/Buford community. In total, 45 archeological sites, one historic structure and nine isolated finds were recorded. The locations of six previously recorded archeological sites were revisits during the current study. Five of these sites were relocated, and the sixth site has been destroyed. Thirty-eight archeological sites, the nine isolated finds and the historic house complex are recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Seven prehistoric sites are considered potentially eligible or eligible for the NRHP. These sites (Sites 9GW220, 9GW489, 9GW498, 9GW224, 9GW476, 9GW495 and 9GW496) will not be affected by the current undertaking. In-place preservation is proposed for these seven sites.
