Abstract

Archaeological Services Unit staff responded to a request for an archaeological survey of a portion of Georgia Veterans State Park, near Cordele, for construction of a new depot to serve a proposed excursion railroad running from Cordele to near Plains. An intensive survey, with screened shovel tests placed on a 30 meter grid plus visual inspection of exposed surface was conducted on June 26. Two sites were discovered. Neither site is recommended as eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Based on the results of the survey, the proposed project will have no effect on significant archaeological resources.
