Abstract

At the request of the Parks and Historic Sites Division of Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Archaeological Services Unit of the Historic Preservation Division conducted a reconnaissance-level archaeological survey of a ca. 182-acre tract along the Suwannee River near Fargo, Clinch County, Georgia. The pedestrian survey was performed by a crew of three on February 7, 8, and 9, 2001. The survey included surface examination, subsurface testing, and interviews with local residents. One archaeological site was discovered. The site is an extensive, but sparse surface scatter of prehistoric lithics found along the dirt road that passes through the tract and ends at the river. The site lacks further research potential and is considered not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Local informants provided the location of an unmarked cemetery near the west central boundary of the tract. Some depressions that might be graves were observed in this area, but there was too much disturbance to map the cemetery area with any confidence based on surface features. Development should not take place near the cemetery area until the extent of the cemetery has been determined and a buffer has been established.
