Abstract

Archaeological investigations at East Nashville Mounds (40DV4) and the 'French Lick/Sulphur Dell Site (40DV5) were conducted by Panamerican Consultants, Inc. under contract with the Tennessee Department of Transportation. These investigations were carried out in conjunction with the proposed replacement of the Jefferson Street Bridge over the Cumberland River, Davidson County, Tennessee. Investigations included Phase II testing at East Nashville Mounds and data recovery excavations at both East Nashville Mounds and French Lick/Sulphur Dell. Archaeological investigations at East Nashville Mounds were limited to sampling that portion of the site contained within the existing and proposed rights-of-way for the Jefferson Street Bridge. Initial data recovery at French Lick/Sulphur Dell was restricted to specified bent locations. Subsequent data recovery was conducted in conjunction with the construction of a storm water runoff system at French Lick/Sulphur Dell. These Mississippian mound and village centers occupy opposite banks of the Cumberland River in what is now Nashville, Tennessee. East Nashville Mounds is apparently single-component Mississippian, while the French Lick Site also has Early through Late Archaic, Gulf Formational, and Middle Woodland components.
