Abstract

From August 28 through September 14, 1999, covering a total of nine field days, an intensive cultural resource assessment survey was conducted by Environmental Services, Inc. (ESI) of 200 acres in Henry County, Georgia. The goal was to locate, identify, delineate, and evaluate all cultural resources within the tract, including prehistoric and historic archaeological sites and historic structures. This study area is the proposed site of various light industry facilities, and it consists of root raked fields, secondary growth wooded uplands, and Bethlehem Bottoms. The cultural resource assessment survey included a pedestrian inspection combined with systematic shovel testing (n= 337) at 60, 30, and 15-meter (m) intervals. The survey resulted in the discovery of ten prehistoric archaeological sites (9HY298, 9HY299, 9HY300, 9HY301, 9HY302, 9HY303, 9HY305, 9HY306, 9HY307, 9HY308), one historic archaeological site (9HY304), and four isolated finds; no structures occur within the project tract. Intensive shovel testing of these sites yielded no significant remains, and it is recommended that they do not warrant additional archaeological investigation; site 9HY300, however, will be permanently protected by an existing, ecological conservation easement. It is recommended that the proposed project be allowed to proceed without further concern for impact to significant cultural resources.
