Abstract

On January 3 - 4, 2002, an archeological survey was conducted along a portion of S.R. 25/U.S. 17 on Colonels Island, about 7.2 km (4.5 mi) west of Brunswick, Georgia. Southeastern Archeological Services (SAS) conducted the survey of the area of potential effect to ensure that the Georgia Department of Transportation and the Georgia Ports Authority are in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (as amended). Section 106 stipulates that federal agencies, in this case the Federal Highway Administration, take into account the potential adverse effects of an undertaking to significant cultural resources. The goals of the survey were to locate, delineate, describe and evaluate, in terms of eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places, archeological sites in the area of potential effect for this project. The survey was conducted by Ron Schoettmer and Trent Myers, staff archeologists with SAS.
