Abstract

In December, 2001, R.S. Webb & Associates conducted a Phase I archeological survey of the proposed Taylor's Ridge Overlook Park in Chattooga County, Georgia. The project tract consists of approximately 22.3 hectares [ha (55 acres)] of undeveloped land located at Mack White Gap on Taylor's Ridge, on the north and south sides of U.S. Highway 27, east of Summerville, in Chattooga County, Georgia. No National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) listed resources are located within or adjacent to the project area. No previously recorded archeological sites are within the project tract. One previously unrecorded archeological site (9CG115) was identified in the project area as a result of the survey efforts. This site is recommended eligible for the NRHP under Criterion A (Events-Civil War) and Criterion C (Design/Construction-Civil War picket posts). A preservation plan should be implemented to allow the project to proceed, with sensitivity to the importance of site 9CG115.
