The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) wishes to replace an aging bridge along State Route 19 (SR 19) over Whitewater Creek, in rural central Georgia (Figure I). Southeastern Archeological Services conducted an intensive archeological survey of the area of potential effect (APE) for this bridge replacement project to ensure compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. It stipulates that federal agencies, in this case the Federal Highway Administration, take into account potential adverse effects of an undertaking to significant cultural resources. The goals of the survey were to locate, delineate, describe and evaluate-in terms of eligibility to the National Register-archeological sites in the project's area of potential effect.
