Abstract

The Georgia Department of Transportation wishes to widen and improve a 1.5 km (0.9 mi) length of U.S. Highway 19/41 in Griffin, the county seat of Spalding County. Southeastern Archeological Services (SAS) conducted an intensive archeological survey of this proposed project area to ensure compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. This act stipulates that federal agencies, in this case the Federal Highway Administration, take into account potential adverse effects of an undertaking to significant cultural resources. The goals of the survey were to locate, delineate, describe and evaluate, in terms of eligibility to the National Register, archeological sites in the areas of potential effect for the three projects. The field survey was conducted on October 1, 2001 by SAS archeologists Ron Schoettmer and Trent Meyers, under the supervision of Principal Investigator Tom Gresham. No archeological sites were discovered, and no further archeological studies are recommended.
