Abstract

In January and February of 2003, Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., conducted a Phase I archeological survey of proposed improvements to Lewis Road, in Powder Springs, Georgia. The work was conducted for the Georgia Department of Transportation through the firms of W.K Dickson, Inc., and Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. The proposed project consists of the widening and minor realignment of Lewis Road, improvement of its intersection with C.H. James Parkway and Oglesby Road at the south end of the project, and construction of a multi-use trail that will access recreational facilities in Powder Springs. Two archeological sites were recorded within the project boundaries. One of these sites (9CO653) is a prehistoric lithic scatter, and the other (9CO654) is a house site dating to the first half of the twentieth century. Both sites are recommended ineligible to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) due to the sparsity of the deposits, lack of integrity, or their inability to produce any important, new information through additional archeological investigation. Thus, the proposed undertaking will not adversely affect any significant archeological sites.
