Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of the Jones, Simpson, Alexander corridor in Fulton County on September 25, 2003. The corridor runs along the existing Jones, Simpson, and Alexander streets between Northside Drive and West Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta. The corridor was 97 feet in width, varying to 108 feet, centered on the existing centerline and was approximately 4,500 feet in length. The corridor is highly urbanized with sidewalks built flush to structure walls. For the most part, the only ground available for shovel testing was located in narrow grassy or weedy strips between the street and sidewalk or between the sidewalk and a parking lot. Within this environment, four archaeological sites were located, all dating to the historic period. Site 9FU482 was a small historic scatter confined to the surface. Sites 9FU483 and 9FU484 were the remnants of brick structural foundations on either side of Alexander Street. None of these three sites appears to meet the criteria of eligibility under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The final site, 9FU485, consisted of granite pavers exposed by asphalt wearing in the intersection of Jones Avenue and Marietta Street. The eligibility of this site is unknown. However, the resource will not be effected by the project as currently planned. No further archaeological study of the Jones, Simpson, Alexander corridor is recommended.
