The Wildlife Management Division of Georgia Department of Natural Resources proposes to improve existing informal camping and canoe/kayak launching facilities at Six Mile Put-in on the Amicalola River in Dawson County (Figure 1). WRD requested an archaeological assessment for the proposed project. An intensive archaeological survey was conducted. on the afternoon of February 25, 2004 by Ronnie Rogers, archaeologist with the Office of the State Archaeologist, Historic Preservation Division, Georgia Department of Natural Resources. A gravel road provides access to the area. The portion of the road closest to the stream has been blocked and seeded. A spur road leads into the camping area, which is situated on a triangular terrace at the foot of a moderately steep slope. The river runs almost due south in this area. The upstream end of the survey area was defined where steep slope lay against the river, roughly where the old road had been blocked. The flat area along the river became wider downstream. A small drainage marked the downstream limit of the survey area, which is about 125 meters long. The drainage is about 40 meters south of the last campsite. A trail continues downstream. The distance between the river and base of the slope is about 50 meters at the drainage. A low stone "dam" had been built near the launching area, providing an area of calm water, probably a good summer swimming hole.
