Abstract

This project was conducted for the City of Lilburn which proposes to construct 5 foot wide sidewalks with curb and gutter drainage along Indian Trail-Lilburn Road (Segment 1), Church Street (Segment 2), and Arcado Road (Segment 3) in Lilburn, Gwinnett County, Georgia. The survey area consisted of 6.10 km. (3.8 mi.) of road right-of-way. The proposed sidewalks run parallel to existing roads in residential and commercial areas near downtown Lilburn. The exact side of the roads where sidewalks will be constructed was not disclosed by the time of this survey so both sides were surveyed. Much of the project area has been severely impacted by road construction, business and residential development, utilities installation, and sidewalk construction. In addition, much of the project area is hilly resulting in a topography that consists of slopes of varying degrees that would be the unlikely location for early human occupation. Some of these areas have become severely eroded due to extensive human use. No sites were located during the project survey despite rigorous surface investigations and shovel testing. The lack of any intact archaeological sites within the project areas is not surprising considering the field conditions. A cemetery lies on the south side of Church Street near the intersection with Killian Road. All ground disturbance in this area should be limited to the previously disturbed right-of-way which is dominated by a small drainage ditch. Cypress Cultural Consultants recommends that the Lilburn project be allowed to proceed within the current right-of-ways.
