Abstract

The following is being furnished to you for inclusion as written, in the appropriate environmental document: In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, the proposed project has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project area. The proposed project consists of the minor widening and reconstruction of S.R.140/Pine Log Road from 1-75, near Adairsville, to an area west of Mosteller Spring for a distance of 3.8 miles. The project begins 245 feet east of 1-75, at the intersection with the north-bound off ramp, and ends 370 feet east of the crossing at Mosteller Spring. Existing and required right-of-way is 100 feet. Existing right-of-way is 100 feet at the beginning of the project, at the 1-75 interchange, narrowing to 30 feet of right-of-way, 1200 feet east of the Interstate, and continuing to a point 1.9 miles east of the project terminus, where it widens to 100 feet through the project end. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project rights-of-way was surveyed for the entire length of the project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level I) was conducted in accordance with GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
