Abstract

From January 31 to February 4, 2005, Environmental Services, Inc. (ESI) performed historical and archaeological site evaluation at 9CM258 in northern Camden County, Georgia, on behalf of Summer Beach Development Group. The goal of the Phase II site evaluation was to gather archaeological and historical information suitable for determining the site's National Register of Historic Places eligibility status. Phase I survey of the area identified a late 19th/early 20th century historic artifact scatter, a historic river landing, and a sparse prehistoric artifact assemblage. The archaeological site evaluation involved probing, hand coring, digging shovel tests at reduced intervals in areas of artifact concentration, excavating 3 square meters of soil, exposing 21 square meters of a limited-use turpentine boiling station, and gathering archival and cartographic information at the Camden County Courthouse and the Bryan Lang Historical Library. Based on the results of the testing and background research, the site is considered not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP; however, the work provided information useful for documenting the local history of the area.
