Abstract

This report is Volume IV, a technical volume in a series of reports documenting investigations at the 2nd Avenue Site. Phase I of the revitalization project initially encompassed 11 blocks (but later was reduced to 10 blocks) on the north side of town and is bordered on the western edge by the Chattahoochee River, on the southern boundary by 14th Street, on the eastern edge by 2nd Avenue, and on the northern side by 19th Street (Figure 2). The project area is segmented by a Central of Georgia Railroad track and seven cross streets. The northern section of the project area terminates at the City Mills dam (Figure 3). The Phase I area included commercial, industrial, and limited residential areas. Numerous historic buildings exist within this area, including National Register of Historic Places properties and two National Historic Landmarks. Two historic mill complexes, City Mills and Muscogee Mills, were contained in the north and south of the project area, respectively. The reader should consult Second Avenue Revitalization Project, Columbus, Georgia, Volume I: Historic Resources Survey Report: Architectural Survey and Historic Context (The Jaeger Company and Southern Research 1996) for further details.
