Abstract

Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. conducted data recovery excavations on four prehistoric sites (9PU37, 9PU57, 9PU69 and 9PU71) in the Ocmulgee Wildlife Management Area in Pulaski County, Georgia. Excavations were conducted prior to construction of the Bleckley County Fishing Lake, a 100-ac lake straddling the Pulaski-Bleckley County line. The four sites are situated adjacent to a third order tributary of the Ocmulgee River, with the largest and most artifactually diverse site, 9PU57, elevated above the confluence of the tributary and river. The landform was determined by geomorphological investigation to be an old dune formation. Field work was implemented during the winter and spring of 2003 and utilized a combination of hand-excavated units, measuring 2 x 2 m, and machine-excavated trenches and blocks.
