Abstract

This report details the results of archaeological Phase I survey and Phase II testing of site 380c18 for GDOT project BR-0000-00(306), Rabun County, Georgia and Oconee County, South Carolina. The proposed project would replace the structurally deficient bridge on SR 28 over the Chattooga River. The proposed project would be 1750 feet in length and the amount of required right-of-way would vary from 10 to 60 feet. The Phase I identification survey resulted in the relocation of two previously recorded sites, one in Georgia , 9Ra127, and confirmed the presence of site 380c18 on the South Carolina side of the bridge. Site 9Ra127 was located just outside the Area of Potential Effect (APE) for the proposed project and therefore the project will not impact the site. The project passes through the middle of site 380c18 which had been previously determined eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Phase II testing was conducted to determine if the portions of 380c18 within the APE contribute to the overall eligibility of the site. It was determined that the portions of 380c8 within the APE do not contribute to the overall eligibility of the site; resulting in the finding that the project will have no adverse effect to site 380c18.
