Abstract

A Phase I archaeological reconnaissance survey of the eastern bank and southeast corner of Slip No. 1 was undertaken in response to the proposed construction of a bulkhead and walkway along the Savannah River waterfront on Hutchinson Island in Chatham County, Georgia. The project area under archaeological investigation is limited to the eastern side of Slip No. 1 and encompasses 500 ft. from the mouth of the slip northward, and 100 ft. down river along the south bank of Hutchinson Island. An overlay of historic maps shows that the project area is in the approximate location of the western entrance of the original Fig Island Channel. Two areas are recommended for Phase II investigation: one underwater in the slip and one buried beneath the river bank. Monitoring by a professional archaeologist is recommended for the entire project area during dredging and Georgia Archaeological construction of the bulkhead wall. Further research is suggested in local archives in relation to the shipyard and dry dock of Usina & Jones. An interpretive exhibit of the historic uses and archaeological investigations that displays the significance of this area to Savannah's development is suggested.
