Abstract

This is an Archaeological Reassessment of GDOT Project BR-0000-00(683) in Gordon County. The proposed project would replace the existing structurally deficient bridge on CR 143/County Line Road over Polecat Creek in Gordon County. The existing bridge would be replaced with an 80' x 28' structure approximately 100 feet south of the current alignment. The project would begin approximately 1400 feet west of the current bridge and end approximately 500 feet east. Existing right-of-way is approximately 40 feet. In order to improve drainage the project has recently been changed to include additional required right-of-way that will vary up to 90'. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed changes was conducted for the entire project area. An archaeological survey (Level I) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
