Abstract

In October 2005 and February 2006, Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. (EPEI) conducted a Phase I archaeological survey at four locations along I-75 in Tift County, Georgia. These four locations include overpass improvements for County Road (CR) 107/Wesley Rigdon Road over I-75, and interchange modifications for the I-75 interchanges with CR 410/Brighton Road, CR 421 /Chula-Brookfield Road, and CR 11 /Willis Still Road. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate archaeological sites within the Area of Potential Effects (APE) of the proposed undertaking, so that potential effects to any resources identified could be evaluated in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The project was conducted under a contract with Parsons Transportation Group. A review of the state site files at the University of Georgia in Athens showed that two previously identified archaeological sites had been reported in the proposed project areas, 9TI26 and 9TI27. Both sites were recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). During EPEI's survey, two sites were identified, Site 9TI36 and 9TI37. Site 9TI36 has both a prehistoric and an historic component, and 9TI37 is a historic site only. Both sites are recommended ineligible for the NRHP. Based on the results of the survey, no further work is necessary at these locations and clearance for construction is recommended.
